Listening to him talk about his own life made her feel her own troubles seemed insignificant, small. She was also a little jealous that he got to go away to school, like she'd always longed to do. Moving to sit at his feet, looking up at him, she placed one small hand on his knee and smiled slightly. "I'm sure you will be a great laird," she said quietly, but confidently. "You're brave and strong, wise and you seem to have this... way about you... worldly, I'd call it. Your kin may not understand it, but it will be good for them... you'll see. One day, my old cragedy husband and I will name one of our many ugly little boys after you. The great Noah Campbell," she smiled more then, trying to make a joke, but the smile quickly faded into worry, as his pains made their way back into her mind. "Are you all right? You should be resting."

He was utterly exhausted. He'd spent the last hour tending to Gabriel's horse, probably much more than necessary. He'd brushed the horse down, removed all the burrs from it's coat, fed and watered it, before finally covering it with a blanket and letting it rest. Then he'd cleaned up all the horse equipment, and tucked it back in the saddle bags it had been taken from. With a quiet sigh, he pushed into the mannor house, dusting his hands on the leathers that covered his thighs.

"Probably gone to bed," he mused to himself, desperately hoping that's where Fionna would be. Thoughts of finding her in bed with that pretty boy filtered through his head, and he had to shake himself clean of those images. Maybe now wasn't the time for sleep.

Wandering through the mannor, he managed to find the kitchen and the buttery, where all the servants had gathered for some cards and revelry now that their work day was drawing to a close. Poking his head in, he grinned and asked if he could join them.

One of Noah's stablehands greeted him kindly and thrust a mug of hot ale into his hand. With only a moment's pause, Kenneth glanced down at the ale, before lifting it to his lips, and downing the whole mug.

He couldn't get her out of his head.

The entire time the doctor saw to him, or commented on the skill of the bandage wrapped about him...he couldn't get her intense, dark eyes out of his mind. Her face...the tone of her voice or the slope of her nose..the shape of her lips...how she'd touched him... None of it. While he was being seen to, he sent Ian back to the keep, to make sure the MacAlister's were getting settled all right and that Fionna had a place to sleep. In truth, he didn't want that man who was coming to know him well to see his distraction. And he didn't want to have to see the MacAlister's until the next day. He needed the night to compose himself.

When he was done..rebandaged and ready to go, he made his way back to the keep slowly...restlessly. He didn't want to be there. To answer to anyone. The temptation to find somewhere else to lie for the night...perhaps someone else to work off this distraction with was great...but he didn't think he could if he wanted to, his ribs as they were. No. He took his time, moving through his home. This place, he'd always called him but still felt so foreign in. And tried not to think about the strength and courage in his visitor's daughter.

She could finally relax. As her father's arms wrapped around her, she sighed quietly, and burried her face against his shoulder. She didn't care if she'd come here to prove him wrong, or if he would be incredibly angry at her. Right now, she just needed to be held, and to feel like a child again. After a few minutes, she finally pulled away from him, risking a glance back at Noah. Perhaps her gaze lingered a little too long there, at his handsome profile, the way his lips moved. Even in the darkness she could see him, feel his presence like a warm heat even from this distance. "I was treed," she explained softly, a slight tremble in her small body. "Noah..." she paused, letting his name hang in the air as if savoring it, before clearing her throat and meeting her father's gaze equally. "Lord Campbell killed th'boar and go' me down from th'tree." She neglected to tell him that he'd hurt himself in the process and she'd bandaged his wound, lest her face flush with the memory of his bare skin beneath her fingers. "Then Kenneth found us and led us back 'ere."

Name: Kenneth Docharty
Clan: MacAlister
Birthdate: December 4, 1568
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 198 lbs
Marital Status/Orientation: Widower
Personality: Stoic, Brave, Noble, Loyal, Quiet
Brief History: Born to Albert and Delilah Docharty, Kenneth is the youngest of six children, five boys, and one girl. Albert raised all his sons with a stern hand, and made sure each knew both how to fight, and how to tend the land they lived on. Albert worked in the charge of Iain MacAlister, Gabriel's father, as his head seward, dying bravely beside Iain during the first MacBain MacAlister war, along with three of his five sons.

When he was 21, he married fifteen year old Marybeth Carrie, who died not a year later in childbirth with their first child while Kenneth was defending MacAlister lands from the twice invading MacBains. The child did not surive, either. And the third tragedy that struck Kenneth was the death of his last remaining brother two years later, during the war against the MacBains.

After surviving the war, Gabriel made Kenneth his main seward, and Kenneth began to rebuild his life. Soon he began to grow close to Gabriel's eldest daughter, Fionna. After the girl's twelfth birthday celebration, Kenneth found that he could not keep his thoughts from her intoxicating eyes and entracing smile. But his infatuation would only lead to trouble. He found he was easily coherced by Fionna, and often let her talk him into mischeifs of all sorts. He managed, however, to keep her out of danger most times, but feared that one day she would get him into so much trouble that Gabriel would refuse any marriage negotiations between the two of them.

His only hope was that Gabriel would see how much he cared for his first-born and allow the marriage.

He felt it when she fell asleep leaning against him and took comfort in the ability to just hold her. The issues had been talked to death and it was nice to be able to just...almost relax for the day. They were heading to Campbell land. In his own youth, it hadn't been a big deal. But now..the political climate was very different. But there was little to worry about for the next few hours...so he tried to relax. Enjoy the feel of his wife against him, how she relaxed in his arms.Collapse )

It was not fair.

It was not fair that Sean and Seamus were treated so differently. While they were taught to weild swords and lead wars, she was taught to tend house and keep her eyes prettily averted when a man of importance was near. She loved her mother very much but there were times when she thought her quite dull. She seemed only to take what Fionna's father gave her, never asking for more...Collapse )

Nothing had prepared Noah Campbell for the frustration he'd face dealing with his father once he'd returned. Neal Campbell was one of the most stubborn men alive, he was convinced of that now. And he was having difficulty accepting his son for the adult he'd become. Perhaps, one day, Noah would understand when he had children of his own. But now...his father was little more than a stranger to him. For it had been his mother who had visited him at the university and written to him regularly, relaying updates on what was happening. And though Neal had sent him away for the purpose of giving him insight and knowledge he himself was unable to obtain, now Noah felt distinct disdain from the man at times. And though he'd only been back for a couple of months, the challenge of being respected and trusted by his own father was...enormous.Collapse )

[03 Sep 2004|10:10pm]
Name: Noah Maeron Campbell
Clan: Campbell
Birthdate: March 22nd, 1577.
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 198 lbs.
Marital Status: Single.
Personality: Charismatic, intelligent. Clever and witty...his strength lies in his brains rather than his sword in battle. Though he could certainly hold his own if he had to. Young and idealistic...full of excitement to make a difference back home.
Brief History: The eldest child of Laird Neal Gregory Campbell and Moira Ann Campbell, Noah Maeron was the undisputed heir to the Campbell rule. Even if he had had any brothers, he showed the promise of leadership young in life. Two sisters, and three miscarraiges of would-be brothers, left his mother barren finally. And like the children of most leaders in the clan system, he rarely saw his own father, with the exception of his military training. His life was in preparation for future leadership. And though he'd been tutored since he was a child, when he was twelve, Neal sent his child to Edinburgh...to learn. Perhaps his own clan was caught up in local clan wars, but he saw a future with greater danger from England than from his neighbors. He wanted his son to know more than his hills and local lands. Noah, needed to know the ways of the world.

Eight long years away from his home. His family. It had done much to change him. He wasn't the child he was when he left his Campbell lands. He'd seen first hand troubles far different than he remembered his father dealing with. He'd seen women burned at the stake and read of his own family's war with the MacAlisters. He knew of strife with England...Scotland's queen had been beheaded not that long before he'd arrived in Edinburgh, the atmosphere still charred. And now he was returning. He was a very different man from his father. He knew that. And his ideas were going to seem radical, at best. His father...perhaps...would regret his forward thinking in sending Noah to university. He was aware of what had gone on while he was gone. His father had been thoughtful enough to keep up correspondance, sporadic though it was. Not long after he'd left, his clan had gone to war, with the MacBains against the MacAlisters and MacGregors. He hadn't understood it at the time, but was full of concern for his family and kin. As a child he was raised to hate the MacGregors, but he hadn't understood the need to fight the MacAlisters. They'd always been neutral friends more than anything else. But what had caused his father to join the MacBains against them, he didn't understand. And in correspondance that could be intercepted, his father had been brief at best. Now, four years after that long war, he'd just returned. And the MacAlister Laird was seeking peace. And while Noah wasn't leading his family...he hadn't sent him away for nothing. Perhaps..he could be of some influence.

She was always awake first. It was how they'd been since the early days, since he brought her home, made her head of his household. Sure there had been days when she'd found the warmth of his embrace too enchanting and had allowed herself a few extra moments curled up against him beneath the covers. But most days, she was the first to rise, as he was always the last to go to sleepCollapse )

Name: Keegan Teague MacAlister
Clan: MacGregor/MacAlister
Birthdate: April 27, 1567
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 130 lbs
Marital Status: Married to Gabriel MacAlister
Personality: Strong, Protective, Noble, Worrisome, Stoic, Often called "the MacGregor tiger" for her over-protective nature
Brief History: Seamus MacGregor, son of Keegan and Adelin MacGregor, was a strong man, a proud man, and loved his wife Fionna enough that when she died, leaving him with only one son and heir, Fergus, he never remarried. When it came time for Fergus to marry, Seamus found a less-than-stable match for his son in Dianah MacTavish. While the couple found no love, they managed to produce two heirs, two daughters, Keegan, named for her great-grandfather, and Adelin, named for her great-grandmother. Soon after Keegan's fourth birthday, Fergus was killed in a clan war between the MacGregors and their rival clan, the Cambells, leaving behind his mentally unstable wife, two daughters, and swiftly aging father. Sending Dianah to the nunnery, Seamus began schooling his eldest grand-daughter in the ways of clan leading while at the same time searching for a suitable match in a laird that would do well in taking care of his people.

And he found that match in Gabriel MacAlister. A month after Keegan's sixteenth birthday, the two were betrothed and married only a week later, uniting the MacGregors and MacAlisters against the constantly warring MacBains and Campbells. However, Seamus would never live to see the birth of his first great-grand-child, Fionna, in 1584, dieing mere months prior to the babe's birth, making Gabriel the official laird of Clan MacGregor.

In 1589, the MacBains, waged a blood war upon the MacAlisters. Fearing for the safety of his family, Gabriel sent Keegan, Fionna, and their twin one-year-old sons, Seamus and Sean, off to live in Keegan's ancestral home high in the mountains with only a handful of guardsmen and kin. It would be four long years before Gabriel saw his family again. Once the war died down, and things began to calm, he traveled to the mountain fort to retrieve his wife, nine year old daughter and five year old sons.

There was much rebuilding to do, for the MacBains especially kept up their antics. Keegan became a midwife and spent much of her time in the villages with her kith and kin, delivering babies, helping with crops and illnesses while Gabriel helped rebuild homes and farms and consoled his clan on how to protect themselves from raids and attacks. The pair barely saw each other for many years, only then at night, when they were too exhausted to even exchange words as they drifted off into sleep in each other's arms.

But finally things were beginning to calm and Keegan and Gabriel were beginning to rediscover each other again. Their love and marriage was reinforced with the birth of their daughter, Lillian, early in 1597. These were happy days...

Name: Gabriel MacAlister
Clan: MacAlister
Birthdate: November 14th, 1559.
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 215lbs.
Marital Status: Married to Keegan MacAlister.
Personality: Emotionally strong. A natural leader. Lives with the daily fear of losing his family. Haunted by the death of his family and the betrayal of his brother. Honorable and proud of his land and his people. Finds little time for humor, but is content with his life.
Brief History: The second born son of Iain and Lorna MacAlister. She had lived near the border and her family had been the victims of a cattle raid by the MacBain's. She survived, raped and beaten and left..only a woman and posing little threat. Iain took her in when she came to him for help and before long he married her. And he took the child she bore as his own. Iain did his best to treat his two sons equally, but perhaps he couldn't help but favor Gabriel, his own.

But as the boys grew, it was no longer necessarily favoring. Between the two, it was obvious which one was a natural leader. Which deserved the succession of leadership. Tradition said it should always be the oldest son, but on occasion it was overlooked. And when Iain announced who his choice was, Alec MacAlister was less than happy about it. Leaving, he went to the MacBains and used his intimate knowledge of the family who raised him to help lead an attack that could have destroyed the clan. And it resulted in the death of Iain, Lorna, and their sisters. With the help of the MacGregors, they were finally able to push them back again, but not without deep losses. They would have to rebuild, with Gabriel.

The MacBains were getting more and more aggressive. And the ailing Laird MacGregor was looking for security for his own clan. He had only two daughters and no sons to take over. But he had a strong friendship with the MacAlisters and had long been planning with Iain to wed his eldest to Gabriel. And now was the time.

He hadn't been looking forward to the arranged marraige, and neither had Keegan. But when he finally went to meet her, it hadn't taken long for them to fall in love. The union had made both clans strong again. And though fourteen years and four children later, the MacBain threat was far from over, Gabriel was working hard to keep his clan ready and strong.
